The Position
The Project Manager is accountable for the safe, disciplined and successful delivery of mining capital projects from opportunity identification and study development through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and transition to operations. The role integrates scope, cost, schedule, quality, risk, permitting and stakeholder requirements while applying the organization’s project governance and decision-gate process.
Working across technical services, operations, maintenance, supply chain, finance and external partners, the Project Manager establishes clear accountabilities, secures the resources required for execution, and ensures that project outcomes deliver the approved business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Project Development and Governance
• Develop project charters, business cases, scopes, execution strategies and decision-gate deliverables that clearly define objectives, assumptions, constraints and success criteria.
• Lead scoping, pre-feasibility, feasibility and definition studies as applicable, ensuring the level of engineering and estimating supports the required investment decision.
• Apply project governance, document-control, change-management and assurance requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
• Prepare and coordinate approval packages, including authorizations for expenditure, funding requests and recommendations to project sponsors and senior leadership.
Planning and Project Controls
• Establish and maintain the approved scope, work breakdown structure, integrated schedule, cost baseline, cash-flow forecast, resourcing plan and project execution plan.
• Monitor commitments, actual costs, accruals, progress, productivity, forecast-at-completion and schedule performance; identify variance and implement recovery actions.
• Maintain a current project risk register and ensure risks, opportunities, contingencies and critical interfaces are actively managed.
• Provide accurate and timely reporting on safety, scope, cost, schedule, quality, risk, decisions and action items.
Engineering, Procurement and Contract Management
• Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering and design reviews to confirm technical quality, constructability, operability, maintainability and compliance with the design basis.
• Develop contracting and procurement strategies with Supply Chain; support bid evaluations, contract awards, vendor coordination and expediting.
• Administer consultant, contractor and supplier performance, including scope compliance, progress measurement, change orders, claims, quality and commercial closeout.
Execution, Commissioning and Handover
• Lead safe field execution in coordination with operating departments, including access, shutdowns, tie-ins, construction sequencing and interface management.
• Ensure inspection, testing, quality assurance and quality control requirements are established, documented and completed.
• Develop commissioning and operational-readiness plans covering systems completion, training, spare parts, procedures, asset data, warranties and turnover documentation.
• Complete project closeout, lessons learned and post-implementation review, including confirmation of performance against approved objectives and benefits.
Leadership and Stakeholder Management
• Lead multidisciplinary project teams and clarify roles, responsibilities, decision rights and performance expectations.
• Engage project sponsors, site leadership, operations, Indigenous and community relations teams, regulators and external stakeholders as required.
• Coach project personnel in practical project-management tools and reinforce disciplined, consistent execution.
Skills and Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline. A combination of relevant education and extensive project-delivery experience may be considered.
• Professional Engineer designation, or eligibility for registration in the applicable jurisdiction, is preferred.
• Project Management Professional designation is considered an asset.
• Minimum 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in mining, heavy industrial, infrastructure or construction projects, including direct accountability for project delivery.
• Demonstrated experience managing engineering consultants, contractors, procurement, project controls, commissioning and operational handover.
• Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety, environmental, permitting and engineering requirements. Ontario mining experience is an asset.
• Experience in an operating mine environment, primarily focused on surface mining operations.
