The Position


The Open Pit Blast Helper supports the safe preparation and execution of blasting activities within the open pit. Working under the direction of a qualified Blaster, the role assists with blast preparation, loading activities, blast-area setup, and general duties required to support safe and efficient blasting operations.

The Open Pit Blast Helper is expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to safe work practices and follow all site procedures, blasting protocols, critical controls, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Key safety expectations include:

  • Follow the direction of the qualified Blaster and remain within the scope of assigned duties, training, and authorization.
  • Handle explosives and blasting accessories only when trained, authorized, and permitted to do so.
  • Follow all requirements for explosive security, transportation, storage, and accountability.
  • Maintain awareness of blast exclusion zones and access-control requirements.
  • Identify and immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged or blocked holes, equipment concerns, or deviations from the blast plan.
  • Follow established procedures for blast preparation, clearance, and post-blast activities.
  • Never approach or interfere with a suspected misfire unless specifically authorized and directed.
  • Maintain situational awareness when working around heavy mobile equipment and active mining areas.
  • Use required PPE and maintain blasting tools, vehicles, and work areas in a safe condition.
  • Exercise stop-work authority and immediately report any condition that could place people, equipment, or the operation at risk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Blaster with the preparation and loading of production blast holes.
  • Support the safe handling and movement of explosives and blasting accessories as permitted by training, certification, and site procedures.
  • Assist with the placement and connection of blasting components under the direction of a qualified Blaster.
  • Prepare blast areas and assist with establishing and maintaining blast exclusion zones.
  • Identify and communicate blocked or damaged holes, water conditions, incorrect hole depths, or other field conditions that may impact blasting activities.
  • Assist with pre- and post-blast inspections and blast-area cleanup.
  • Maintain blasting tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Support explosive inventory control and required documentation as directed.
  • Follow all blasting procedures, critical controls, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings, workplace inspections, risk assessments, and training activities.
  • Perform other duties required to support Drill & Blast and Open Pit operations.

Skills and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Surface Miner Common Core or equivalent training.
  • Explosive handling modules
  • Ability to complete all required site, explosives, and blasting-related training.
  • Ability to understand and follow safe work procedures, instructions, and established blasting protocols.
  • Ability to work safely around heavy mobile equipment and within an active open-pit mining environment.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in mining, quarrying, construction, or a heavy industrial environment.
  • Previous exposure to drilling and blasting operations.

Competitive total compensation package including:

  • Company contributions and matching into a Defined Contribution Pension Plan; and
  • Annual total compensation of CAD$89,624 to CAD$110,712 (including annual bonus eligibility).
