Purpose
The Security Guard is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and professional environment through the consistent application of site security procedures and protocols. This position provides a visible security presence, conducts routine patrols and monitoring, responds to incidents and emergencies, and protects site personnel, property, and assets.
The Security Guard reports directly to the Security Supervisor and is expected to communicate operational concerns, incidents, and safety issues promptly and accurately. The Security Guard is expected to demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to safety and customer service at all times.
Safety & Sustainability
- Maintain a safe, healthy, and secure work environment for employees, contractors, visitors, and site personnel.
- Follow all site safety procedures and Discovery Facility Risk Management protocols.
- Participate in required safety meetings, training, and security briefings.
- Report hazards, unsafe conditions, security concerns, and policy violations to the Security Supervisor
- Conduct routine security and safety patrols as assigned.
- Follow all site-specific emergency procedures and established response protocols.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment as required.
Security Operations & Site Monitoring
- Maintain a professional and visible security presence throughout the assigned area.
- Conduct routine foot and vehicle patrols as directed to protect site assets, property, personnel, and facilities.
- Monitor access points, entrances, exits, restricted areas, and other designated locations.
- Monitor CCTV, alarm systems, radios, access control systems, and other security technology as assigned.
- Verify authorized access and challenge or report unauthorized individuals in accordance with site procedures.
- Manage access cards and fobs as directed and report discrepancies or concerns to the Security Lead.
- Maintain awareness of site activities, conditions, and potential security risks.
- Perform scheduled security checks and inspections and report deficiencies promptly.
- Follow all site-specific rules, regulations, post orders, and operating procedures.
Incident & Emergency Response
- Respond promptly and appropriately to security, safety, fire, medical, and other emergency situations.
- Assess situations and take appropriate action within the scope of training and authority.
- Notify the Security Lead and/or appropriate site contacts of incidents requiring escalation.
- Contact emergency services when required and provide support until emergency responders arrive.
- Maintain a calm, professional, and controlled approach when dealing with confrontational or high-pressure situations.
- Assist with evacuations, emergency response, access control, and scene security as directed.
- Preserve incident scenes and relevant information when required for further investigation.
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely daily activity logs, occurrence reports, patrol records, and other required documentation.
- Complete detailed, factual, and professional incident reports before the end of the assigned shift or within required timelines.
- Record relevant observations, actions taken, persons involved, and notifications made during incidents.
- Immediately report significant incidents, safety concerns, security breaches, or unusual activity to the Security Lead.
- Provide clear and accurate information during shift handovers.
- Maintain confidentiality of security-related information and records.
- Assist the Security Lead with investigations and follow-up activities when required.
Communication & Customer Service
- Serve as a professional first point of contact for employees, contractors, visitors, and site personnel regarding security-related matters.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with all individuals while maintaining appropriate security standards.
- Respond to questions and concerns within the scope of the position and escalate matters when appropriate.
- Maintain effective communication with the Security Lead and other site contacts.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, discretion, and sound judgment at all times.
- Build positive working relationships while maintaining appropriate security boundaries.
Teamwork & Professional Conduct
- Work collaboratively with other security personnel to maintain consistent site coverage and security standards.
- Follow direction provided by the Security Lead and Security Supervisor.
- Support other security officers during incidents and operational activities when required.
- Maintain a professional appearance and comply with uniform and identification requirements.
- Arrive on time, prepared, and fit for duty.
- Complete all required training and maintain knowledge of site procedures and security expectations.
- Demonstrate leadership through professional conduct and by setting a positive example for others.
Training & Qualifications
- Minimum Grade 12 education
- 1+ year of experience in a security, preferably in a commercial, industrial, institutional, or similar environment.
- Valid security licence in compliance with applicable local/provincial regulations.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.
- Understanding of basic security practices, access control, patrol procedures, and emergency response.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to complete clear, accurate, and professional reports and documentation.
- Comfortable using radios, access control systems, CCTV, computers, and other security technology.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful or confrontational situations.
- Strong observation, attention to detail, and situational awareness.
- Ability to follow established procedures and exercise sound judgment.
- Professional conduct, reliability, integrity, and discretion.
- Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a security team.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Competitive total compensation package including:
